MI beat RCB by 7 wickets in IPL 2024 match no. 25

With this win, MI has climbed up to the 7th position with 2 wins in 5 matches. Whereas RCB is in the 9th position with just 1 win in 6 matches so far.

Mumbai Indians (MI) on Thursday registered their second win of the season after beating Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by 7 wickets at the Wankhede Stadium. The hosts chased down a total of 197 with 27 balls to spare, exposing RCB’s poor bowling lineup.

Mumbai’s dominance began with Jasprit Bumrah winning the battle against Virat Kohli in the Powerplay and then taking down four more RCB batters to register his second fifer in the IPL. However, the visitors managed to put up a decent total of 196 on the board, courtesy of Dinesh Karthik’s explosive innings towards the back end. In reply, Mumbai chased the total down with 27 balls to spare with their star batter Suryakumar Yadav coming back to form at the right time.

It was a typical RCB start where the runs weren’t coming as fast as they would have liked it. To make matters worse, Bumrah dismissed the in-form Kohli and soon, Akash Madhwal dismissed debutant Will Jacks within the Powerplay.

A limping RCB found the much-needed support from Rajat Patidar and Faf du Plessis who stitched an 82-run stand for the third wicket. While Patidar roared back to form with a 25-ball 50, the skipper garnered 60 off 40 balls.

But the concern persists with Glenn Maxwell’s form as the Aussie all-rounder failed to deliver again. Adding nothing to his run tally, the dynamic batter was trapped in front by Shreyas Gopal for a 4-ball duck.

Bumrah ended up his spell with 5 for 21 while Dinesh Karthik put up a show towards the end of the innings with his power hitting. He completed his fifty off just 22 deliveries. He scored 19 runs in the last over taking RCB’s total to 196.

In reply, MI openers gave a dream start to chase with a partnership of 101 in just 49 balls. Ishan took charge and raced to a 23-ball fifty before falling prey to Akash Deep in the 9th over. But Rohit kept the assault going with Suryakumar Yadav at the other end. It took a brilliant catch from Reece Topley to dismiss the former captain and then, comeback man Surya began the juggernaut.

RCB’s bowling had no answer to Mumbai’s assault as every second ball was going for a boundary. Suryakumar, playing his second game this season, played the style of cricket he is known for. He scored 52 off just 19 balls at a strike rate of 273. Apart from one drop by Glenn Maxwell on 15, SKY didn’t give any chance to the opposition at all.

His three sixes in Akash Deep’s over took the match away the visitors. Surya played a match-winning innings but couldn’t finish the game as he handed an easy catch to Mahipal Lomror at deep point boundary on a delivery which was close to being called a no-ball.

Skipper Hardik Pandya played a 21-run cameo off 6 balls to complete the chase for Mumbai. With this win, MI has climbed up to the 7th position with 2 wins in 5 matches. Whereas RCB is in the 9th position with just 1 win in 6 matches so far.
