Greg Chappell also talked about how he would have supported Stephen even if he had pursued a sport as his career.

Australia cricket great Greg Chappell has talked about his son Stephen Chappell’s appointment as the Chief of Airforce of the country. Speaking to The Australian, as per Times of India, Greg explained how he was initially astounded by his son’s massive milestone. “We were gobsmacked initially by his huge appointment to Chief. Obviously, he was on that trajectory, but it wasn’t something that we expected in the short term”. Greg later made a bold statement saying that Stephen’s feat was far bigger than what the ex-cricketer had achieved in the sport. “I would say that his achievement is greater than anything that I’ve ever achieved”, he added.

In the same interview, Greg Chappell explained how his son Stephen was single-minded about pursuing his dream of joining the Air Force. “He was a good cricketer at school – he played in the first 11 at Brisbane Grammar School and was quite a useful all-rounder but his focus was always on flying”, Greg said. He then further revealed how the Hollywood movie ‘Top Gun’ influenced his son to pursue the military path. “We came out and I said ‘What’d you think of that?’ and he said ‘That was fantastic, that’s what I want to do when I grow up’. He never deviated,” the ex-cricketer revealed.

Greg Chappell also talked about how he would have supported Stephen even if he had pursued a sport as his career. Though, Greg did acknowledge that it was never easy to follow in a father’s footsteps in an area like that. “If he’d chosen cricket or sport, we would have supported that but I don’t think it’s an easy path to tread.” The Australian cricketer was also amazed to see how Stephen took after him in terms of focus and discipline needed in both military and elite sports. What made the feat more impressive was his son’s ability to also be a good father despite his demanding profession.

Widely regarded as one of Australia’s greatest-ever players, Greg Chappell’s international cricket career spanned from 1970 to 1984. In those 14 years, Greg played 87 Tests while scoring 7110 runs. He was considered to be the nation’s best batter since Don Bradman due to his impressive Test average of 53.86. Greg also represented Australia in 74 ODIs and scored 2331 runs in the format.
