Fans are in awe after finding out why Claudio Ranieri speaks to his smartwatch during games

Fans are impressed with Claudio Ranieri’s ‘reflection in-action’ touchline technique after he recently opened up on why he speaks to his smartwatch during games.

In late December last year, the well-travelled 71-year-old completed a fairytale reunion with Serie B outfit Cagliari, 31 years after his first spell at the Italian club.

So far, former Chelsea boss Ranieri has made an impression at the Isolani, winning two of his opening three games in charge.

It has been a positive start at his old stomping ground for the experienced coach, who is keen to keep up with modern-day techniques in his latest role.

After footage emerged of Ranieri talking to a smartwatch on the touchline, the Italian was asked about his unusual in-game routine.

“I talk to myself,” he said via Caño Football. “I have new phones and smartwatches, so I record notes. When I watch the game back, I know which moments to look for.

“Some people write things down but I prefer to record. That way I can continue watching the game.”

So there we have it. Ranieri keeps a record of specific moments during games by using his watch. Here’s how fans on social media reacted to the use of technology.

One said: “Remarkable insight. An excellent tool for analysis and reflection; these little things all add up,” while another commented: “Damn guy is like 100 years old yet making use of tech.”

A third wrote: “Been doing this for year. Love it! Always remember trialing this whilst I was delivering a session and helped me a lot. Been doing it ever since. Great tool for reflection in-action and drawing on key moments for on-action review.”

A fourth said: “I’ve thought about doing this but figured it was overkill for a youth coach. If we have the technology, why not use it?”

Ranieri, who is best known for leading Leicester City to Premier League glory in 2016, opened up on his decision to rejoin Cagliari last month.

“I’m going back to Cagliari: I’ve always known it, I declared it even then, at the time of my departure,” the 71-year-old said.

“Cagliari made me understand that maybe I could make it in my job, I had found all the elements that helped me in those three years: fans, players, managers, we were all one.

“In these days you have helped me make this decision, which was not easy for various reasons. We are bound by mutual respect and love, many beautiful memories.”
