Manchester United will take on Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, while Southampton’s reward for stunning Manchester City is a clash with Newcastle.
United, who beat Charlton in the last eight, will head to the City Ground for the first leg before then hosting Forest at Old Trafford, while Southampton’s remarkable 2-0 triumph over City on Wednesday evening sees them at home to Newcastle first before heading to Tyneside.
Saints were huge underdogs against a City side who ripped Chelsea to shreads at the weekend. However, first-half goals from Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo secured Nathan Jones’ men a deserved when against a City side who failed to register a shot on target in a game for the first time since 2018.
Forest earned their place in the last four after beating Wolves 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the City Ground.
Henderson the hero in Forest win
The home side had led in normal time when former Wolves defender Willy Boly prodded home before Matheus Cunha’s low cross was swept home by Raul Jimenez.
Dean Henderson then turned away Ruben Neves’ spot-kick in the shootout, after Jose Sa had denied Sam Surridge, then kept out Joe Hodge’s effort as Forest converted all four of their remaining penalties to win.
Steve Cooper’s men will be appearing in their first League Cup semi since 1992.
Newcastle, meanwhile, booked their place after seeing off Leicester 2-0 at St James’ Park on Tuesday night.
Goals from Dan Burn, his first for the club, and Joelinton did the trick for Eddie Howe’s side.
The ties will be played over two legs week commencing January 23 and January 30.
