Napoli fans singing Champions League anthem is spine tingling

by admin

Napoli fans were in fine voice ahead of their Champions League group A game against last season’s runners up, Liverpool, singing along with the anthem.

Whilst some teams aren’t as used to listening to it before their games, Napoli fans have got used it being played ahead of their games in recent years.

The Italian giants have been without it for the past two seasons however, playing instead in the Europa League, but it returned on Wednesday night.

Luciano Spalletti’s side welcomed Premier League Liverpool to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium and the crowd were very excited.

They joined in signing the anthem, screaming along to the final “Championnnnnnnnnnnns!” at the end of the anthem, and it’s beautiful to hear.

The singing seemed to inspire the home side as they had a couple of early chances against Jurgen Klopp’s team, with Victor Osimhen hitting the post from a tight angle.

Piotr Zielinski stepped up to score from the spot, and the Italians were soon wishing they kept the Polish midfielder on penalty taking duty.

They were awarded a second spot kick inside 25 minutes as Virgil Van Dijk tripped Osimhen in the box but the striker had his effort from 12 yards saved by Alisson.

The home side were dominating in Naples and Van Dijk was forced into a block, as the Italians looked most likely to get the next goal.

That proved to be the case just after the half hour mark, with Joe Gomez losing the ball under pressure and former Fulham midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa scoring after some excellent work.
