Manchester United pose a threat to Arsenal in the battle to sign Mykhaylo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk after a report revealed Erik ten Hag has wanted him since his Ajax days.
There are high hopes for Mudryk as he enjoys a breakout season. This year alone, he has made his debut for the Ukraine national team, as well as scoring his first Champions League goals for Shakhtar Donetsk.
For a few months, Mudryk has been linked with a transfer to the Premier League. All along, Arsenal have been the leading suitors, with reports of their interest dating back to August.
The Premier League leaders are likely to step up their interest in Mudryk during 2023. Respected sources are suggesting that talks are already underway from Arsenal’s perspective.
However, they are not the only club in the race for Mudryk. One report recently warned of a rival attempt by Newcastle, while another is now revealing Manchester United have their own plans for the 21-year-old.
According to The Sun, Man Utd have been watching Mudryk for a while – and their manager has been doing so for even longer.
In fact, the report claims Ten Hag tried to sign Mudryk back when he was managing Ajax. Now, he could have the chance to do so with Manchester United.
Their scouts have been aware of Mudryk’s progress and could recommend a transfer approach. Ten Hag would seemingly be in support of the idea as well.
Mainly a left winger, Mudryk can cut inside onto his stronger right foot. Therefore, he could provide competition for the likes of Marcus Rashford or Jadon Sancho at Man Utd.
Alternatively, Arsenal would be putting him in contention to rival Gabriel Martinelli in their lineup.
Man Utd have Mudryk alternative and another rival
The Gunners have had their eyes on Mudryk for a long time, so it may be a case of Man Utd playing catch up. Perhaps with that in mind, an alternative target for the Red Devils is mentioned in the report.
Per The Sun, United are also keen on AC Milan’s Rafael Leao. Named the best player in Serie A last season as his side won the league, Leao has since been linked with Chelsea – who still seem to have the advantage in the race to sign him.
His contract talks with Milan seem to have hit a stumbling block. Therefore, there could be a chance to prise the Portuguese ace out of Italy.
Two years older than Mudryk, he would be another expensive option. Both are exciting players in their own right.
Given they have at least a two-man shortlist, it appears United are focusing on adding to their attack. Of course, with all the drama surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo right now, it isn’t too surprising to see.
Maybe they would be better off going for a natural centre-forward. However, either Mudryk or Leao would be able to inject excitement into their attack from a slightly wider position.
Both players are ones to keep an eye on in the months ahead.
