Manchester United captain Harry Maguire rejected a sensational loan move away from Old Trafford ahead of the January window shutting, according to stunning reports.
Maguire retained the United captain’s armband under Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag in the 2022-23 season, despite losing his place in the starting XI.
The 29-year-old United defender has often been criticised for his lack of consistency and impact at Old Trafford since his £80m move from Leicester City in 2019.
Maguire has been left battling for first-team minutes under Ten Hag, who prefers the first-choice centre-back partnership of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.
According to The Daily Star, Maguire rejected a loan move to Inter Milan before the window closed on 31st January.
The newspaper reports that the Red Devils centre-back will ‘consider leaving’ in the summer if he is unable to salvage his United career under Ten Hag.
The Daily Star added that Maguire does not ‘want to be a bit-part player’ at United and is ‘running out of patience’ with United.
United manager Ten Hag previously insisted that the former Leicester defender is not his “fifth choice” in defence and urged Maguire to “fight for his position.”
Speaking ahead of United’s 3-1 win over Reading in the FA Cup on the weekend, he said: “No, he’s not fifth choice.
“But it’s up to him. I have to say he’s training very well, bringing quality and that is what I expect from all the players in the squad.
“He has to fight for his position and things can change, sometimes also really quickly. I think he is making progress and it’s up to him.”
